The Abyss

September, 2016

The Abyss captures the deep, immeasurable space accessed through the subconscious — the gulf, the void, the vast chasm of subterranean worlds that are impossible to contain in a static image because they are, by definition, ever-changing.

Within this space, fixity is defied by psychic death: a total loss of subjective self-identity. The annihilation of the ego frees the psyche to surrender, transcending past notions of self toward the generation of new states of being.

Shifting elements work on the subconscious, alternately obscuring and revealing through the ongoing alchemical opus of self-discovery. Against this pulsating terrain, the gaze functions as both an anchor to the self and a channel to its ever-changing states.
